On July 1, the Peruvian Bible Society celebrated with gratitude and hope a new year of institutional life and biblical ministry in the country. A celebration that not only honours history, but also projects a renewed commitment to bring the Word of God to the heart of every Peruvian, in their language and in their reality.
Although it was formally constituted as a Bible society in 1946, the work of spreading the Scriptures in Peru dates back to 1822, when Diego Thomson arrived as a representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society to promote the distribution, dissemination, and translation of the Bible. Since then, their legacy continues, generation after generation. The message of hope, justice, and transformation has run its course, touching lives in cities, rural communities, and indigenous peoples.
A Celebration with Purpose
“On July 1, we celebrated 79 years, and on July 6, 203 years of Bible ministry—a double celebration,” said Pablo Gutiérrez, Executive Director of the Peruvian Bible Society, speaking about the commemorative event. As in previous years, a special recognition was given to pastors and Christian leaders for their valuable contributions to Bible ministry in their regions.
More than 200 pastors and leaders gathered for the anniversary event, which centered on the theme “Equipping the Church Against Corruption and Violence,” two of the most urgent and painful issues facing Peruvian society today. Attendees received Bible study guides as a concrete tool to address corruption through the lens of Scripture.
In the Language of the Heart
The Peruvian Bible Society continues to lead Bible translation programs, ensuring that communities who speak different languages receive the Word of God in the language of their heart.
“This year marks 50 years since the formation of the first Bible translation teams for Quechua of Ayacucho, Quechua of Apurímac, and Aymara, some of the largest language families in this part of the world. In March, the Quechua Bible of eastern Apurímac was presented,” Gutiérrez noted.
In addition, the Bible Society carries out wide-scale distribution of Bibles, New Testaments, devotional books, and Bible materials for children, youth, and families.
Training is another key focus. Through its Virtual Bible Ministry, thousands of people across the country can access courses and resources that help them deepen their understanding of the Bible’s message.
79 Years of Spreading Life
Guided by its mission to “bring life to Peruvian society through biblical values,” the Peruvian Bible Society remains actively committed to Bible translation, publication, distribution, and training.
Amid today’s many challenges, the Peruvian Bible Society looks back with gratitude and ahead with vision. When the Word arrives, hope blooms, and transformation becomes possible.
