Trauma Healing - War in UkraineTrauma healing has become an urgent need for children in Ukraine, where life is no longer marked by routine but by interruption. The sound of air raid sirens, long hours in shelters, and the quiet weight of uncertainty have become part of everyday life. Childhood, as they once knew it, has been profoundly disrupted by war.

Responding to Trauma Through Scripture and Care

In the midst of this reality, the Bible Society of Ukraine is responding with a mission of healing. Through a trauma-sensitive initiative, children are being engaged with age-appropriate Scripture alongside creative activities such as drawing, storytelling, prayer, and play. These are more than simple activities; they are intentional efforts to create safe spaces where children can begin to process their experiences.

Creating Safe Spaces for Children

Within these spaces, something meaningful begins to happen. Volunteers, chaplains, and caregivers have observed that when children are given the opportunity to engage with the Bible in a supportive environment, their anxiety begins to ease and a sense of stability slowly returns. What starts as a small moment of calm can gradually grow into a deeper sense of peace.

In this context, the Bible becomes more than a book. It becomes a companion in crisis, offering reassurance and hope amid uncertainty. It provides a steady voice in the noise and a source of light in the midst of darkness.

The Ongoing Need Among Children Affected by War

The need, however, remains immense. Millions continue to live with the psychological impact of war, with children affected by war in Ukraine among the most vulnerable.. Many are growing up with anxiety, grief, and ongoing disruption to their daily lives. The long-term effects of these experiences will continue to shape them for years to come.

A Growing Response to Trauma Healing in Ukraine

Even so, the Church continues to stand as a place of trust, care, and hope. Working alongside churches, educators, and psychologists, the Bible Society is equipping communities to respond not only to spiritual needs but also to emotional and psychological ones. This holistic approach brings together Scripture, compassionate care, and consistent presence.

The scale of this response continues to grow. In 2026, the Bible Society of Ukraine aims to reach approximately 16,000 people through trauma healing workshops, support groups, Restoration Centers, and facilitator training. Each of these efforts is designed to equip individuals and communities with the tools to process trauma, rebuild resilience, and offer care to others.

In the midst of war, healing is still possible. Through small, faithful acts of care and connection, hope is being restored—one child, one moment, and one story at a time.
