Faith, Healing, and Hope: Standing with Ukraine Through War and Recovery - United Bible Societies

March 2, 2026

War in UkraineFour years into the war in Ukraine, the headlines have shifted. But for millions, the struggle continues. What began as an urgent humanitarian response has become a long-term battle for emotional, psychological, and spiritual survival.

Amid rising casualties, prolonged displacement, and deepening trauma, churches across Ukraine have become places of refuge and stability. At the heart of this faithful response is the Ukrainian Bible Society, helping ensure that God’s Word, pastoral care, and trauma healing continue to reach those who need them most.

“The need has shifted,” the Society reflects, “from immediate crisis intervention to building long-term resilience in individuals, families, and communities.”

Delivering Hope: 1.6 Million Bibles and Counting

Since the full-scale invasion began, the demand for spiritual support has been overwhelming. In response, the Ukrainian Bible Society has distributed approximately 1.6 million Bibles, nearly 1,000 copies every day.

The scale of the need is staggering. With around one million people serving in the armed forces and civilian casualties rising, countless families are grappling with grief, fear, and uncertainty.

War in Ukraine“All of this affects people’s moral, mental, and even physical well-being,” the Society explains. “They are in need of support and comfort. As a result, the population is increasingly turning to churches for help.”

The demand is universal, touching every generation:

  • Adults seek full Bibles, New Testaments, devotionals and pastoral materials to navigate prolonged stress, trauma, grief, moral injury and family separation.
  • Children and Youth, many of whom have known nothing but instability, are in growing need of illustrated Bibles and age-appropriate storybooks. The Society notes this is the fastest-growing area of demand, as churches prioritize the generation that will one day rebuild Ukraine.

For 2026, the Society aims to distribute another 300,000 to 400,000 copies of Scripture, continuing its mission to place a source of hope into the hands of those who need it most.

Healing the Invisible Wounds of War

War in Ukraine

Recognising that Scripture alone cannot heal the deep wounds of war, the Society launched a Trauma Healing ministry less than six weeks after the invasion. What began with a single, urgent seminar for 90 people has grown into a nationwide network of care.

As of early 2026, the program has achieved a remarkable impact:

  • 6,380 participants have been trained in Trauma Healing trainings.
  • 144 training sessions have been conducted across the country.
  • 93 additional psychological and spiritual support initiatives have been implemented.

These initiatives include restoration camps, community healing programs, and targeted support for families of fallen soldiers, veterans, children, and internally displaced persons.

The goal for 2026 is to reach another 16,000 people through workshops, support groups, restoration centers and facilitator training.

A Story of Impact: Tetiana’s Light in the Darkness

In 2022, Tetiana and her two children found refuge in a church in Kharkiv, where they received their first illustrated Children’s Bible. With her husband at the war, reading Scripture became a nightly ritual that brought comfort and unity to their fractured lives.

When her husband returned, he was a different man, scarred by the trauma of war. He struggled with anger, despair, and alcohol, and family life grew even more painful. Yet, Tetiana’s faith, nurtured by the Bible she had received, became her anchor. It gave her the strength to lead her family through the darkest moments, finding peace in prayer even as explosions shook their home. The Bible was more than a book; it was their stability in the chaos.

Recently, her young daughter, Vika, quietly mentioned she didn’t have a Bible of her own. When she was gifted one moment later, she clutched it tightly, overwhelmed with joy. For Tetiana, watching her daughter treasure that book was a moment of profound gratitude. a symbol of the unshakable hope her family had found. Through war, hardship, and uncertainty, she found unshakable hope and strength in God’s Word.

Hope in the midst of war in Ukraine

Even in the midst of the war in Ukraine, God’s Word continues to bring faith, healing, and hope — one family, one church, one community at a time.
