A Historic Milestone: The Inauguration of the New Bible House in Uganda - United Bible Societies

December 17, 2024

On November 22, 2024, The First Lady of the Republic of Uganda and Minister of Education and Sports, H.E. Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, presided over the grand and official opening of the New Bible House on Bombo Road. This momentous occasion marked a remarkable milestone in the journey of the Bible Society of Uganda (BSU).

A Legacy of Support

The First Lady’s presence was especially meaningful, as it brought the journey of the Bible House full circle. Thirty-three years ago, on May 30, 1991, she laid the foundation stone for the Old Bible House, which still stands behind the new state-of-the-art structure. This legacy of steadfast support was celebrated by BSU in their social media post, describing the event as “a beautiful journey and legacy in supporting the works of the Bible Society of Uganda.”

A Vision Fulfilled

The opening ceremony highlighted the collective efforts that brought the New Bible House to life. Rev. Fr. Dr Mark Richard Ssajjabbi, Board Chairperson of BSU, reflected on the mission behind the project: “The establishment of this Bible House is a testament to our collective efforts and the fulfilment of our shared vision. We have created a place that will serve as a beacon of hope, enlightenment, and spiritual nourishment for all Ugandans. Our mission is clear: to ensure that everyone in Uganda has access to the Holy Scriptures in media and formats that communicate effectively to them.”

The new facility is designed to be more than just a building. It is envisioned as a hub for gospel work and a source of mission resilience, enabling the distribution of Holy Scriptures in various media and formats accessible to all Ugandans.

A Gathering of International Fellowship

The ceremony also had an international dimension, with messages of encouragement from the United Bible Societies (UBS) Fellowship. Rev. Dirk Gevers, UBS Secretary General, shared a heartfelt virtual message.

In his virtual message, Rev. Dirk Gevers encapsulated the spiritual significance of the New Bible House, stating, “May this building that we celebrate today be itself a symbol that God’s Kingdom is not tied up in bricks and mortar, but that it will become the means by which the people of Uganda… may build their houses upon the solid rock of God’s Word, of Jesus Christ.”
Representatives from UBS Fellowship, including Dr Alfred Kimonge, GS, Bible Society of Tanzania; Mr Sam Abwoga, Treasurer, Council, Bible Society of Kenya, were present to show solidarity. Their presence underlined the unity of purpose among Bible Societies in East Africa and beyond. Global Mission team was represented by Peter Clever Katende, IT Services & Systems Manager, GMT Finance & Operations and Kenneth Amwayi, Member Relations Manager, GMT Relationship Management.

Transforming Lives for Generations

Speeches from key figures underscored the transformative potential of the New Bible House. Pastor Christian Aliddeki, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, described it as a place where the Word of God will thrive and expand. General Secretary Serumaga Peter Lumbuye emphasized its mission to inspire, educate, and transform lives, declaring: “The Bible House represents more than just a building; it is a sanctuary of faith, learning, and outreach… Together, we will continue to foster a deep connection to God’s Word and serve our communities with the love and compassion exemplified in the Scriptures.”

A New Chapter Begins

The completion and inauguration of the New Bible House signal the start of a new chapter for the Bible Society of Uganda. It stands as a symbol of faith, unity, and hope for generations to come, continuing to spread the timeless message of love, peace, and enlightenment found in the Holy Scriptures.
This landmark achievement is a testament to the power of vision, collaboration, and unwavering faith. It ensures that the Word of God remains accessible to all Ugandans in a manner that resonates deeply with their lives and needs.

About Bible Society of Uganda

The Bible Society of Uganda (BSU), established in 1968, builds on a legacy rooted in the pioneering efforts of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Its mission centres on four key areas: Bible translation, distribution, printing, and engagement. To date, BSU has successfully translated Scriptures into 28 local languages, including 16 complete Bibles and six New Testament editions.
Beyond translation, BSU actively fosters engagement with the Scriptures through diverse programs tailored to meet the spiritual and practical needs of Ugandans. These initiatives include youth and children-focused activities, trauma healing programs, Faith Comes by Hearing audio resources, and efforts to make the Bible accessible to individuals with visual impairments or hearing disabilities. Through these comprehensive efforts, BSU continues to bring the transformative power of God’s Word to communities across Uganda.
