During May, two Bible Societies were honoured with continuing patronage from their country’s royal family – recognition of their enduring legacy, exemplary work, and value to the communities that they serve.
The United Kingdom
The British Royal Family confirmed that King Charles III would become a Patron of the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS), on May 10.
Mother of King Charles, Queen Elizabeth II was Patron of BFBS since 1952 – when she acceded to the throne – until her death in 2022. The Queen’s patronages were reviewed after her death, and the King accepted this role, saying he was “delighted to accept the patronage of Bible Society”.
BFBS has had a Royal patron since 1943, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth became joint patrons. Queen Victoria became a member of BFBS in 1838.
Bible Society’s Chief Executive Paul Williams said: “We’re absolutely delighted with this news and very thankful. This is an affirmation of the value of Bible Society’s work in sharing God’s word at home and abroad.
“The King’s patronage is a sign that the Bible is being taken seriously at the heart of our country’s life, and we’re so pleased that the connection with the Royal family which meant so much to us under Queen Elizabeth is to continue.”

Denmark
On May 30, the Danish Royal Family announced that His Majesty King Frederik X has agreed to take on the role of Patron of the Danish Bible Society (DBS).
The Royal Patron of the Danish Bible Society was previously held by Queen Margrethe II and her abdication from the throne on January 14, 2024, led to a review of the royal patronages held.
Of the patronages held by Queen Margrethe, 14 were assumed by King Frederik – one being the DBS.
The Bible Society is one of only 140 total patronages for the members of the Danish Royal Family – including DBS among a privileged group.
Johannes Baun, General Secretary of the Danish Bible Society, is pleased about this recent development: “We are happy and proud that we can carry on the tradition of the Regent as patron of the Bible Society. It is particularly exciting at a time when we are starting work on a new Bible translation, which will be authorised when it is published in 2036. We are therefore very pleased about the renewed bond between the royal family and the Bible Society.”

What is Royal Patronage?
Royal patronage is a rare privilege, bestowed upon organizations that exemplify a steadfast commitment to serving others, in alignment with the values and vision of the royal family. Patronage can also derive from the passions and interests of the particular royal family member. It signifies a royal endorsement of Bible Society ministry, core values, and the transformative work being done in God’s name.
It has the potential to open doors to unique opportunities, fostering invaluable connections and partnerships that advance Bible ministry.
