The Diglot Bible, presenting both Ewe and English texts side by side, offers a smooth reading experience that fosters comprehension and spiritual growth. This format eliminates the need for readers to carry separate Bibles in each language, making it easier for individuals to cross-reference passages and deepen their biblical understanding.
The Diglot Bible is designed to meet the needs of Ewe speakers who seek to engage with the Word of God in both their native language and in English. It simplifies their study and devotion time, allowing them to experience the scriptures in a more profound and personal way.
Bridging the Language Divide
The launch event, themed “We heard them speak in our own language,” was attended by special guests, including the Moderator of the General Assembly of the EPCG, Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Bliss Divine Agbeko (Rtd), who served as the main speaker. Distinguished guests also included Togbe Dr. Adza Kodzo IV of Abutia Kloe, Hon. Sam Okudzeto (a former President of the Bible Society of Ghana and a member of the Council of State), Dr. Mrs. Ellen Hagan, Vice President of BSG, and leaders from various Christian faith traditions.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Agbeko praised the initiative, noting its importance in bridging linguistic barriers and enhancing spiritual growth. “The Diglot Bible is a powerful tool that brings God’s word closer to the people. Hearing God speak in one’s mother tongue is a deeply personal and spiritual experience that cannot be understated,” he said.
Innovative Approach
The Very Rev. Dr. John Kwesi Addo Jnr, General Secretary of BSG, expressed his excitement about the launch, highlighting the Diglot Bible’s potential to transform lives.
“This bilingual Bible allows readers to explore the richness of the scriptures in both Ewe and English, deepening their connection with the Word of God. It also addresses the issue of contemporary Ghanaians being more fluent in English than in their mother tongue, promoting bilingual literacy,” he explained.
Kwesi Addo Jnr said the diglot ensured readers were able to effortlessly navigate the pages or revisit specific passages, easily connecting with the wisdom contained within. “Diligent reading of the Ewe-English diglot shall bring the native Ewe speakers and those of us, who are Ewes by association, to the point of fluency in both languages,” he said.
Community Impact and Future Plans
The launch of the Ewe-English Diglot Bible follows the successful introduction of similar editions in Ashanti Twi and Ga languages. The enthusiasm and positive feedback from attendees at the launch event reflect the significant impact this initiative is expected to have on the Ewe-speaking community.
As the Bible Society of Ghana continues to strive towards making the Bible accessible to all, the launch of the Ewe-English Standard Version Diglot Bible marks a pivotal step in their ongoing efforts to break down language barriers and bring God’s word closer to the hearts of Ghanaians.
